24 Bit Serial Interface Digital Controller

A/D Chipset Controls Multiline Character Display Modules
Sunnyvale, CA., July 5, 2000 -- Advanced Linear Devices, Inc., announces the availability of an 18-bit dual-slope integrating analog/digital converter. Designed as a (2) chip-set to minimize mixed signal crosstalk and noise, this A/D converter is unique to the industry. The analog chip designated the ALD500R functions as the dual-slope integrator, which also incorporates an on-chip precision voltage reference. The digital chip, ALD521D is a pre-programmed microprocessor designed to complement the analog chip by providing the necessary control and handshake functions for outputting a 24-bit serial binary data word. The
ALD521D features separate control inputs for power-down (sleep mode),chip select and integration time select. In the power-down mode, the total 2-chip current consumption is typically less than 28 (A. Combined, the chip-set offers circuit designers an immediate solution to an otherwise complex engineering task that would generally require several months of development effort using discrete components.

Applications for the 2-chip A/D converter includes PC-based digital panel meters, precision analog front-end input for PC-based controllers and signal conditioners, laboratory datalogging, process monitors, DVM for portable/field troubleshooting and calibration systems. Full-scale input range is +/- 2.00000 Vdc with a linearity of 0.005%. Its high input impedance enables the user to alter the full-scale range using a simple resistor divider network.

The A/D chip-set is also available as a printed circuit board module designed for use with conventional PC based computers. A 25-pin connector is provided to interface the module to a PC computer via the parallel printer port whereby the analog input value can be displayed as a virtual digital panel meter on your PC monitor with up to +/- 5-digit resolution. It comes complete with the analog and digital chip-set, circuit and timing diagrams, parts list, and PC DOS operating system software. The default reading rate is typically set at 2.5 samples/sec, although a wide range of rates from 1-15 samples/sec can easily be set-up by the user.

The 2-chip set is priced at $6.91 each in 1K quantities. Lower resolution units are available at $5.98 each. Standard packaging includes both DIP as well as SOIC footprints. Sample quantities are available from inventory. Full production is planned for July 2000. The circuit board module is priced at $99 each in single quantities.
