5½ Digit Dvm Module Includes Direct Character Display Interface

Sunnyvale, CA., June 15, 2002 -- Advanced Linear Devices, Inc., announces the availability of a stand-alone printed circuit board module designed for precision measurement applications requiring a high resolution A/D converter and integral multiline character display driver interface. Designated the ALD MB203A, the module functions as a precision +/- 5 ½-digit Digital Voltmeter (DVM) featuring a direct-connect interface to many standard 16 characters x 2 lines or 16 characters x 1 line LCD/VFD character display modules. Powered by the ALD500R/ALD523D 2-chip chipset, the module is primarily intended for embedded display applications including digital panel meters, custom instrumentation displays, temperature monitoring, weigh scales and others where greater than 4 ½ digits display resolution is required. It is designed to be fully compatible with character display modules containing industry standard HD44780 display driver chips. Virtually any DC input voltage can be converted, scaled and displayed with resolution up to 7 full digits plus sign (+/-9999999). Provisions for optional on-board input scaling (resistor divider) and preamplifier network can be user configured to attenuate or to amplify a wide range of DC input voltage levels, ranging from microvolts to kilovolts. An optional input port on the board can be used to convert and scale serial digital input data up to 32 bits in length to user-defined display parameters. DC inputs are single ended (optionally fully differential) with auto-zero and auto-input polarity detection. Operating power supply requirement is a single +5 VDC @ 9mA max. The MB203A is shipped with factory default settings and calibration data stored in on-board 1K EEPROM. Users can modify the initial default setup of the MB203A and perform re-calibration via an optional PC parallel printer port connection. After initial setup, the module may be unplugged and operated in the stand-alone mode. Up to 3 separate display range and display unit settings are hardware and software selectable. Overall module outline dimensions are approximately 3.00 inch x 2.95 inch x ½ inch. Standard version MB203A Modules are priced at $98 each in single quantities.
